It is well known that a way to decrease cost for medical care is to actually spend a little money on prevention and wellness to avoid costly medications and surgeries.

Mechanicsville, Virginia — At Stover Chiropractic we are uncertain just how much or if Obamacare legislation will impact our healthcare delivery or ability to take advantage of it. But most people would certainly want it to actually help us improve our health. In other words we don’t want just sicka are care and symptom treatment. Novel idea right?

It is also well known that a way to decrease cost for medical care is to actually spend a little money on prevention and wellness to avoid costly medications and surgeries. It is refreshing to hear folks from all over the spectrum talk like this. The following article is about this very issue. The stats are very eye opening and Mr. Keeley is on the right track. The only place I disagree or might add a caution is he thinks more primary care doctors are needed to provide the wellness and preventive care the public needs. It seems to the average PCP is very pharmiceutically minded (symptom supression and disease care) because that is how they are trained. It will not do much good for the health of patients toincreased the number of medical doctors in thefield unless they get trained differentl. Legislators and policy makers should look more closely at physicians who by design focus more on prevention and healthcare, not just disease care and end-stage pathology. For example, chiropractors, naturopaths, and some forward thinkers that specialize within western medicine. So enough of my commentary, here’s the article.

Primary Care and Wellness Programs Are Must Haves For Healthy Future

BY BRIAN E. KEELEY baptisthealth.net

The most important mission of hospitals and healthcare providers in today’s world must be to promote wellness, primary care and preventive medicine, not simply take care of the sick after the fact. This seeming oxymoron is at the core of cutting-edge thinking in healthcare: Invest in primary care programs, primary care physicians (or PCPs), wellness initiatives and healthy lifestyles. Today’s medical practices have led to medical inflation in the United States at twice the average for the rest of the developed world. We have the highest per capita healthcare costs and highest portion of any country’s Gross Domestic Product devoted to healthcare, and 30 percent of our local population is now uninsured. Primary care, with its emphasis on prevention and early intervention, can save millions of dollars by avoiding costly (and unnecessary) emergency room visits and hospital admissions. It also is the very best approach to treating the uninsured and less fortunate.

We need more primary care physicians and free clinics in underserved areas. Few primary care physicians sign up for Medicaid due to low reimbursement; therefore, we also need to recruit nurse practitioners to fill this void. Healthcare in America today is fragmented, uncoordinated and costly, due to a number of structural reasons. One key factor is the national shortage of primary care doctors. For a variety of reasons — financial, quality of life, prestige — more doctors in training seek to become specialists while the number of primary care physicians continues to dwindle. Many people in South Florida do not have a personal physician; rather, they have four or five specialists they visit with little time for coordination among them. Recognizing this, Baptist Health South Florida established an academic affiliation between our new West Kendall Baptist Hospital and Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. This new teaching hospital is a training ground for primary care physicians, with the goal of educating — and keeping — more state-of-the-art skilled PCPs in South Florida. While this affiliation is new, Baptist Health’s commitment to prevention and wellness has a long and productive history.

As South Florida’s largest private employer, we recognized long ago our duty to lead the way. In 2001 we created our Wellness Advantage program for employees as part of our goal to have the healthiest workforce in America. This has grown over the years into a major community health initiative, with hundreds of free educational programs on healthy lifestyles, health screenings and health advisers. The wellness initiative was designed to empower people to take charge of their lifestyle for the prevention and early detection of disease. Providing primary care alternatives and outpatient diagnostic centers that are accessible to the population helps keep down emergency room visits and other healthcare costs. As part of our not-for-profit and faith-based mission, Baptist Health provides more than $200 million annually for charity care and community benefit, including millions to support seven free clinics devoted to primary care, millions more in free diagnostic services and millions in screenings, educational programs and wellness initiatives. These clinics allow patients to be treated in the most cost-effective and appropriate fashion and provide relief to all local hospitals, private and public, by caring for these patients before their conditions become acute, thus avoiding expensive hospitalizations.

As the demographic tsunami approaches and more baby boomers turn 65, we should all embrace wellness and primary care initiatives and the need for primary care physicians to care for all of us, especially those who are approaching their senior years. With ever more sophisticated diagnostic, treatment and surgical techniques and medical specializations, we seem to have lost sight of the basics: eating well, exercising, not smoking and maintaining our weight. Wellness and primary care programs focus on these essentials and help prevent such chronic diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

One of the key tenets of the healthcare reform movement is to change our dysfunctional system by establishing “medical homes” staffed by primary care physicians. Augmented by a support staff of nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nutritionists, as well as electronic medical records, these primary care centers of the future will be the citadels of collaboration and, more importantly, coordination. Studies show that 20 to 30 percent of acute hospital admissions can be avoided by such an approach. The key element is primary care physicians who are trained in the most advanced methods of prevention, wellness and early intervention, with a holistic or patient-centered view of care. Increasingly and appropriately, our health and our future will be in their hands.

Mechanicsville, Virginia — At Stover Chiropractic I’m often asked by patients about yoga. Is it a good idea? Should I do it? I’m not familiar with yoga as a practitioner of the art. But I’m very aware of some moves. I don’t think it is any better to start into yoga as a solution for back pain or any health problem if one has spinal problems (especially chiropractic subluxations) with out first seeing your chiropractor or normal doctor. However if you have been told you are OK entry level yoga can be great. Here is a link to a video clip which demonstrates 5 simple, entry level movements and “stretches.”. Check it out.

Successful Ageing

Mechanicsville, Virginia — Ah, the Golden Years: time to enjoy life, with a healthy body and plenty of leisure time. Sounds wonderful, yes? Unfortunately, fewer and fewer of us live such care-free lives. Each of our life goals takes planning, knowledge, focus, and perhaps good fortune; but what can you do to make “successful ageing” more likely — whether you’re a child, working age, winding down, or already retired? Here are some facts and tips, courtesy of Stover Chiropractic, P.C.

A healthy body helps ensure both ability to work and play. Did you know that in the U.S. and Europe, the top 2 reasons we miss work are either the common cold, or musculoskeletal injuries?(1) Did you know that among athletes, the injury rate (“injury” is defined as a disorder that disallows training, playing, or competition for 1 or more days) rises towards 100% as we move from recreational to competitive to professional sport? Whether you’re seeking to build your nest egg and provide for your family, or to play with the grandkids or participate in sport, staying healthy is critical. There are many ways you can protect yourself from the common cold, from hand washing, to a healthy night’s sleep, to a diet rich in raw vitamin-rich food, to chiropractic care [yes, chiropractic care may have beneficial effects on the immune system](2). Ask your doctor of chiropractic to learn more.

When it comes to musculoskeletal injuries—or NEUROmusculoskeletal disorders (injuries and illnesses involving not just lifeless body parts, but instead directed by the nervous system and its control of those parts)—chiropractic care is a safe, proven, and cost-effective option.(3,4) But it’s not just the wonderful things that chiropractors do with their hands that can and do boost patient health—it’s also the information they provide, and the example they set, that benefit our health. “Modeling” positive health behaviors affects a doctor’s patients; and when you engage in it, research shows you’ll also affect those around you, as well as inspire positive health behaviors of your family including your children.(5,6,7,8) Remember, your taking steps to improve your well-being, health, and safety has benefits for everyone in your life; so don’t consider any time or resources your pour into your health “selfish.”

The Golden Years can quickly become soured by a fall. 1 in 3 seniors will fall every year.(9) With your doctor of chiropractic’s guidance, you can limit or avoid these mis-steps and consequences. Joints in the neck and the base of the spine are especially important in helping you balance; and your doctor of chiropractic is trained to help them move properly, especially when they’re a bit stiff from the ravages of time. A chiropractor’s care may also help you stand straighter, helping you not just feel younger, but look younger and more vibrant too! Evidence-based fall prevention programs can decrease your risk(10), and exercise programs—which are essential to fall prevention—can improve your odds of avoiding a fall even if bone density scans suggest it’s not making a difference.(11) Don’t believe the hype of the drug industry that touts the benefits of bone-density increasing drugs, and a host of other illusory “wonder drugs,” as your only hope. If there is a true wonder-drug, it’s the healing power inside of YOU.

Your doctor of chiropractic can help you with your family’s necks, backs, headaches, sports injuries, and more—but don’t’ forget that “doctor” means “teacher.” Doctors of chiropractic are extensively trained in the human frame and nervous system, and are uniquely qualified to help you feel and FUNCTION at your best—regardless of your age. For more information on ways to help your family live better, please call us at 804-559-1100 for guidance; or visit http://virginiachiropractic.org to find a highly-qualified chiropractor near you.

Let’s enjoy our aging,

http://m.discovermagazine.com/2006/nov/cover

Along those lines there has been a great study that demonstrated people who got regular chiropractic adjustments had higher levels of serum thiol in their blood. This is wonderful because serum thiol is an enzyme that repairs DNA damage. How is that beneficial? It means those people (all things being equal) will have less cancer. Or less chance at getting it. That is exciting, and that helps to keep our DNA from becoming our destiny! So get preventative chiropractic care, it looks like it you and the next generation will benefit!

Mechanicsville, VA — If you have been to my Patient Orientation Class you may remember that I go over the World Health Organization’s definition of “health.” It is clear that health is not just a physical issue, but includes mental and social well being. Not too controversial right? Well, it is hard for me (and outside my scope of practice) to council too much on emotional and social problems my patients may have. So it is an issue that largely goes unaddressed, and that is a shame.

The following comes from a blog post by John Piper. He is an amazing author and a pastor in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He describes going to see Clyde Kilby, an English Literature professor at Wheaton College, who he had as a professor while he was a student. Dr. Kilby gave some great pointers for mental health. I think if we could really pull these off, and own them, we’d avoid 90% of our mental anguish in life. Maybe more. Enjoy them, and whatever you do, don’t let them become another burden or stress.

1. At least once every day I shall look steadily up at the sky and remember that I, a consciousness with a conscience, am on a planet traveling in space with wonderfully mysterious things above and about me.

2. Instead of the accustomed idea of a mindless and endless evolutionary change to which we can neither add nor subtract, I shall suppose the universe guided by an Intelligence which, as Aristotle said of Greek drama, requires a beginning, a middle, and an end. I think this will save me from the cynicism expressed by Bertrand Russell before his death when he said: “There is darkness without, and when I die there will be darkness within. There is no splendor, no vastness anywhere, only triviality for a moment, and then nothing.”

3. I shall not fall into the falsehood that this day, or any day, is merely another ambiguous and plodding twenty-four hours, but rather a unique event, filled, if I so wish, with worthy potentialities. I shall not be fool enough to suppose that trouble and pain are wholly evil parentheses in my existence, but just as likely ladders to be climbed toward moral and spiritual manhood.

4. I shall not turn my life into a thin, straight line which prefers abstractions to reality. I shall know what I am doing when I abstract, which of course I shall often have to do.

5. I shall not demean my own uniqueness by envy of others. I shall stop boring into myself to discover what psychological or social categories I might belong to. Mostly I shall simply forget about myself and do my work.

6. I shall open my eyes and ears. Once every day I shall simply stare at a tree, a flower, a cloud, or a person. I shall not then be concerned at all to ask what they are but simply be glad that they are. I shall joyfully allow them the mystery of what Lewis calls their “divine, magical, terrifying and ecstatic” existence.

7. I shall sometimes look back at the freshness of vision I had in childhood and try, at least for a little while, to be, in the words of Lewis Carroll, the “child of the pure unclouded brow, and dreaming eyes of wonder.”

8. I shall follow Darwin’s advice and turn frequently to imaginative things such as good literature and good music, preferably, as Lewis suggests, an old book and timeless music.

9. I shall not allow the devilish onrush of this century to usurp all my energies but will instead, as Charles Williams suggested, “fulfill the moment as the moment.” I shall try to live well just now because the only time that exists is now.

10. Even if I turn out to be wrong, I shall bet my life on the assumption that this world is not idiotic, neither run by an absentee landlord, but that today, this very day, some stroke is being added to the cosmic canvas that in due course I shall understand with joy as a stroke made by the architect who calls himself Alpha and Omega.

Stover Chiropractic, P.C. – We help you heal.

The article isn’t all that new now, but still pretty stunning. Not so much that flu shots are said to be virtually worthless (though that is tough for some folks to imagine), but that we are pounded with how important it is to get the flu shot every year. As if it is an open and close case! Please see the article at the following link.

The Real Truth About the Top 12 Health Myths.

1: Cardio is One of the Best Types of Exercise

In recent years, researchers have begun to realize that conventional cardio, such as jogging, is not all it’s been cracked up to be, and that you can actually improve your health and increase fat burning by making slight modifications to your cardio routine.

The problem is that traditional cardio only works on the slow twitch muscle fibers in your red muscle, completely ignoring your white muscle super-fast twitch fibers.

“Peak 8” refers to peak exercises done once or twice a week, in which you raise your heart rate up to your anaerobic threshold for 20 to 30 seconds, followed by a 90-second recovery period.

To perform these properly you will want to get very close to, if not exceed, your maximum heart rate by the last interval. Your maximum heart rate is calculated as 220 minus your age. You will need a heart rate monitor to measure this as it is nearly impossible to accurately measure your heart rate manually when it is above 150.

Researchers have found that interval cardio produces a unique metabolic response that is in large part responsible for its superior benefits. Intermittent sprinting produces high levels of chemical compounds called catecholamines, which allow more fat to be burned from under your skin and within your muscles. The resulting increase in fat oxidation is thought to drive the increased weight loss.

It is also the only type of exercise that will increase growth hormone levels. This becomes especially important after the age of 30, when growth hormones steadily decline. It is much safer and far less expensive to have your body make growth hormone naturally though Peak 8 type exercises than inject it like many athletes do to the tune of $1500 per month.

I completely understand that for many this issue is not debatable as they believe that vaccines are one of the greatest gifts to public health in the history of civilization.

If you believe that, then let me encourage you to open your mind and explore other views held by many well respected physicians, scientists, clinicians and pro-vaccine safety educators.

You might want to review the article Read This Before Vaccinating for Anything, to help you start your exploration process.

When it comes to vaccines, there are three primary questions that need to be considered.

First, is the vaccine in question safe?

Secondly, does it effectively prevent disease?

And third, which vaccines can safely and effectively be given together or in close succession?

Unfortunately, these issues have not been sufficiently studied for most vaccines, and those vaccines that have been studied frequently show that they are either unsafe or ineffective, or both!

Pro-vaccine-safety educators have long been saying that vaccines can over-stimulate your child’s immune system, sometimes causing the very disease it’s designed to protect against, or worse. And, when several vaccines are administered together, or in close succession, their interaction may completely overwhelm your child’s developing immune system.

This is one of the primary problems with vaccines in general – their detrimental impact on your body’s primary, natural defense against ALL disease.

Now consider that if your child is vaccinated according to the CDC’s recommended schedule, by the time your child starts kindergarten he or she will have received 48 doses of 14 vaccines. Of these, 36 doses will be given during the first 18 months of life – a time when your child’s body and brain is undergoing massive development!

Public health officials have NEVER proven that it is indeed safe to inject this volume of vaccines into infants. What’s more, they cannot explain why, concurrent with an increasing number of vaccinations, there has been an explosion of neurological and immune system disorders in American children.

This issue covers so much ground, it’s impossible to even try to summarize the many hazards and the lack of efficiency data for all the vaccines currently being given, in this article.

The theory behind the introduction of fluoride in your water supply initially seems beneficial – to reduce the incidence of dental caries in children. However, the health dangers of fluoride are so numerous; they far outweigh any benefit to your teeth, and that’s IF water fluoridation actually did what its claimed to do.

Today, even promoters of fluoridation concede that the major benefits are only from topical applications; fluoride works from the outside of the tooth, not from inside of your body, so why swallow it?

Statistics tell us that water fluoridation is ineffective for preventing caries. There is practically no difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries, and no difference between states that have a high- or low percentage of their water fluoridated.

Meanwhile, fluoride can cause significant harm, from dental fluorosis to thyroid damage to reduced IQ… and much more.

I’ve joined forces with the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) to help end water fluoridation poisoning in Canada and the United States.

For more about the dangers of fluoride, and information about how to get involved in this campaign, please see this recent article, which also includes an excellent interview with Dr. Paul Connett, who created FAN and is one of the foremost experts on this topic.

GMOs may be the greatest health disaster in the American diet. Within 9 years of their introduction in 1996, multiple chronic illnesses jumped from 7 percent to 13 percent of the population, food allergies doubled in less time, and many other ailments have exponentially increased with the introduction of GM foods.

Millions may already be suffering health problems caused by genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their diet. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has already urged doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients, citing studies that show how GMOs cause disorders such as vital organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system problems, accelerated aging, infertility, and dysfunctional regulation of insulin and cholesterol.

But not only are GM foods a health disaster, they also pose a significant environmental threat, and industry promises of financial benefits have turned out to be false as well.

For a quick introduction, I recommend reading the article 10 Reasons to Avoid Genetically Modified Foods, which delves into everything from the health problems associated with eating GM foods to the evidence against GM crops as a sustainable, economically and environmentally viable alternative to traditional farming.

There are many misconceptions about melanoma – the most dangerous type of skin cancer that accounts for more than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths. But despite all the bad press linking sun exposure to skin cancer, there’s almost no evidence at all to support that stance. There is, however, plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Over the years, several studies have already confirmed that appropriate sun exposure actually helps prevent skin cancer. In fact, melanoma occurrence has been found to decrease with greater sun exposure, and can be increased by sunscreens.

In my interview with vitamin D expert Dr. Robert Heaney, he explains how the conventional recommendations are in fact causing the very health problem they claim to prevent.

How does sunlight prevent, rather than cause, skin cancer?

In short, it’s the vitamin D formed in your skin from exposure to sunlight that provides this built in cancer protection.

The vitamin D goes directly to genes in your skin that help prevent the types of abnormalities that ultraviolet light causes. Unfortunately, if you follow the conventional recommendation to avoid sun exposure or always use sunscreen, your skin will not make any vitamin D, leaving you without this built-in cancer protection.

Statistics confirm the truth of these findings, as melanoma rates have increased right along with sun avoidance and increased use of sunscreens. If avoiding the sun actually was the answer, then melanoma rates should have decreased exponentially over the past couple of decades…

Instead, sun avoidance and the excessive use of sun screen are actually the two primary reasons for the rise in melanoma.

As recently as 2002, the “expert” Food & Nutrition Board issued the following misguided statement, which epitomizes this myth:

“Saturated fats and dietary cholesterol have no known beneficial role in preventing chronic disease and are not required at any level in the diet.”

This dangerous recommendation, which arose from an unproven hypothesis from the mid-1950s, has been harming your health and that of your loved ones for about 40 years now.

The truth is, saturated fats from animal and vegetable sources provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormone-like substances, without which your body cannot function optimally.

They also act as carriers for important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Dietary fats are also needed for the conversion of carotene to vitamin A, for mineral absorption, and for a host of other biological processes.

In fact, saturated is the preferred fuel for your heart!

Most people use artificial sweeteners to lose weight. The amazing irony is that nearly all the studies that have carefully analyzed their effectiveness show that those who use artificial sweeteners actually gain more weight than those who consume caloric sweeteners.

In 2005, data gathered from the 25-year long San Antonio Heart Study showed that drinking diet soft drinks increased the likelihood of serious weight gain – far more so than regular soda. On average, each diet soft drink the participants consumed per day increased their risk of becoming overweight by 65 percent within the next seven to eight years, and made them 41 percent more likely to become obese.

The reasons for this ironic reality are still being investigated, but there are several potential causes, including:

Sweet taste alone appears to increase hunger, regardless of caloric content.

Artificial sweeteners appear to simply perpetuate a craving for sweets, and overall sugar consumption is therefore not reduced—leading to further problems controlling your weight.

Artificial sweeteners may disrupt your body’s natural ability to “count calories,” as evidenced in studies such as this 2004 study at Purdue University, which found that rats fed artificially sweetened liquids ate more high-calorie food than rats fed high-caloric sweetened liquids.

In the end, the research tells us that artificial sweeteners are NOT a dieter’s best friend, because contrary to what the marketing campaigns claim, low- or no-calorie artificial sweeteners are more likely to help you pack on the pounds than shed them.

There are also a large number of health dangers associated with artificial sweeteners and aspartame in particular. I’ve started compiling a growing list of studies pertaining to health problems associated with aspartame, which you can find here. If you’re still on the fence, I highly recommend reviewing these studies for yourself so that you can make an educated decision.

The meteoric rise of soy as a “health food” is a perfect example of how a brilliant marketing strategy can fool millions. But make no mistake about it, unfermented soy products are NOT healthful additions to your diet.

If you find this recommendation startling then I would encourage you to review my Why Soy Can Damage Your Health, which contains links to dozens of articles on the topic, and a video I recently did.

On the contrary, thousands of studies have linked unfermented soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility—even cancer and heart disease.

Not only that, but more than 90 percent of American soy crops are genetically modified, which carries its own set of health risks.

Here is a sampling of the detrimental health effects that have been linked to soy consumption:

Danger during pregnancy and nursing

I am not opposed to all soy, however. Organic and, most importantly, properly fermented soy does have great health benefits. Examples of such healthful fermented soy products include tempeh, miso and natto.

The use of whole-grains is an easy subject to get confused on especially for those who have a passion for nutrition, as for the longest time we were told the fiber in whole grains is highly beneficial.

Unfortunately ALL grains, including whole-grain and organic varieties, can elevate your insulin levels, which can increase your risk of disease.

It has been my experience that more than 85 percent of Americans have trouble controlling their insulin levels — especially those who have the following conditions:

Overweight

Diabetes

High blood pressure

High cholesterol

Protein metabolic types

In addition, sub-clinical gluten intolerance is far more common than you might think, which can also wreak havoc with your health.

As a general rule, I strongly recommend eliminating grains as well as sugars from your diet, especially if you have any of the above conditions that are related to insulin resistance. The higher your insulin levels and the more prominent your signs of insulin overload are, the more ambitious your grain elimination needs to be.

If you are one of the fortunate ones without insulin resistance and of normal body weight, then grains are fine, especially whole grains. It is wise to continue to monitor your grain consumption and your health as life is dynamic and constantly changing. What might be fine when you are 25 or 30 could become a major problem at 40 when your growth hormone and level of exercise is different.

The primary example here is that of omega-3’s. It’s very important to realize that not all omega-3 fats are the same, and that the type and source of your omega-3 will make a big difference in the health benefits it provides.

There are three types of omega-3 fats:

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)

EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)

ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid)

Many people do not realize that most of the well-known health benefits associated with omega-3 fats – such as mental health, stronger bones and heart health — are linked to the animal-based omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA), not the plant-based omega-3 fat (ALA).

ALA, which is the type of omega-3 found in flaxseed and nuts, is converted into EPA and DHA in your body, but only at a very low ratio.

So even if you eat large amounts of ALA, your body can only convert a relatively small amount into EPA and DHA, and only when sufficient enzymes are present.

This does not mean plant-based omega-3 fats are intrinsically harmful or that they should be avoided, only that you ideally want to include an animal-based form as well. Personally, I regularly include omega-3 (ALA) plant-based foods, like flax and hemp, in my diet, but these are always combined with animal-based omega-3 fats.

But in order to reap its most important health benefits, your omega-3 needs to be from an animal source.
Yes, if it’s RAW.

Unfortunately, this myth insists that conventional pasteurized milk has health benefits, which is far from true. Conventional health agencies also refuse to address the real dangers of the growth hormones and antibiotics found in conventional milk.

Please understand that I do not recommend drinking pasteurized milk of any kind, including organic, because once milk has been pasteurized its physical structure is changed in a way that can actually cause allergies and immune problems.

Important enzymes like lactase are destroyed, which causes many people to not be able to digest milk. Additionally, vitamins (such as A, C, B6 and B12) are diminished and fragile milk proteins are radically transformed from health nurturing to unnatural amino acid configurations that can actually worsen your health.

The eradication of beneficial bacteria through the pasteurization process also ends up promoting pathogens rather than protecting you from them.

The healthy alternative to pasteurized milk is raw milk, which is an outstanding source of nutrients including beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus acidophilus, vitamins and enzymes, and it is, in my estimation, one of the finest sources of calcium available.

For more details please watch the interview I did with Mark McAfee, who is the owner of Organic Pastures, the largest organic dairy in the US.

The low-fat myth may have done more harm to the health of millions than any other dietary recommendation. Again, just as the recommendations to avoid sunshine has increased melanoma rates, the low-fat craze led to increased consumption of trans-fats, which we now know increases your risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

To end the confusion, it’s very important to realize that eating fat will not make you fat!

The primary cause of excess weight and all the chronic diseases associated with it, is actually the consumption of too much sugar — especially fructose, but also all sorts of grains, which rapidly convert to sugar in your body.

If only the low-fat craze had been a low-sugar craze… then we wouldn’t have nearly as much chronic disease as we have today.

For an explanation of why and how a low-fat diet can create the very health problems it’s claimed to prevent, please see thisprevious article.

This is the first medically managed trial that clearly demonstrates that maintenance care provides significant benefits to those who suffer from chronic low back pain.

Mechanicsville, Virginia — There are a few questions we as chiropractors get asked with some frequency. One of them is some variation of, “Do you have to go to the chiropractor for the rest of your life if you start treatment?” Or some combination of questions that are aimed at getting an answer to this. And as far as I know chiropractors have always advised wellness care (or maintenance care) after a course of acute/corrective care.

Like anything related to health and wellness, it takes maintenance or we lose it. This isn’t too controversial. We can’t just brush our teeth once. Or eat one well balenced meal. Or go to the gym once and expect a lifetime of results. So if someone has a damaged or injured spine (causing headaches, sciatica, low back pain, neck pain, disc bulges, migraines, or numbness for example), it takes work to restore function and help symptoms. Next, it takes some attention to maintain the ground chiropractic restores.

The medical option is to maintain a course of pills and drugs. If you have high blood pressure, you take medication for life. If you have high cholesterol, you take a pill for the rest of your life. If you have osteoporosis, you take another pill the rest or your life. If you have arthritis pain, you take another pill for the rest of your life. Sometimes surgery is needed to put out a “fire.” But I don’t know any surgeon that would claim surgery restores function back to 100% the way one would be prior to surgery. Just the presence of scar tissue means one can’t be 100% ever again. In fact, some surgeries are so notoriously problematic, due to the secondary issues it brings about, they have their own diagnosis. For example, “failed back surgery syndrome” is an actual diagnosis. All of this to say, for the person who needs treatment, wether chiropractic or medical, the reality is there is a lifetime of maintenance needed after treatment. [The necessity of maintenance care has been discussed before on this blog.]

So the question is, is wellness care (regular adjustments after pain has resolved and function restored) beneficial? There is a recent study that supports that:

Does Maintained Spinal Manipulation Therapy for Chronic Non-specific Low Back Pain Result in Better Long Term Outcome? Spine (Phila Pa 1976). 2011 Jan 17.

Dr. Stephanie Maj summaries it nicely: I’ve quoted her blog below -

“1. One third of them received 12 treatments of sham SMT over a one-month period.

2. One third of them received 12 treatments of SMT during a one-month period, with no follow-up care during the next nine months, and

3. One third of them received 12 SMT visits during the first month, followed by “maintenance” SMT every two weeks, for the next nine months.

To determine any difference among these 3 care groups, researchers measured pain and disability scores, generic health status, and back-specific patient satisfaction at baseline, and at 1-month, 4-months, 7-months, and at 10-months

RESULTS: Patients in manipulative groups (groups 2 & 3) experienced significantly lower pain and disability scores than the sham group at the end of the first 1-month period.

At the 10-month follow-up, only the maintenance group maintained improvements in pain and disability, while the group that only received 1-months care had reverted to their pretreatment pain and disability levels.

CONCLUSIONS: This is the first medically managed trial that clearly demonstrates that maintenance care provides significant benefits to those who suffer from chronic low back pain.”

Let me know what you think!
