How to Correct Head Forward Posture

Mechanicsville, Virginia — Head forward posture is a common effect of subluxations, especially upper cervical subluxations.  In this day of computers, cell phones, and 10 hour work days, it is a common finding in my office.  Now it is also true that most patients can see and feel their head forward posture, while seldom can they feel the exact misalignment of their atlas vertebrae much less see, for example, how rotated it is when they go about the day.  With posture we are talking about something that is, at least partially, cosmetic.  That results in quite a few questions related to how one goes about correcting this situation.  So I have posted this advice to help which comes from Dr. Stephanie Maj’s blog www.drmaj.com (June 21, 2010):

5 Tips For The Correction Of Forward Head Posture:

Forward head posture is a very common imbalance seen today from excessive cell phone use and from bad posture. Correction of forward head posture takes awareness, resolution of underlying causes, and repetition to make a lasting impact. These five tips will help you get faster results.

1. Focus on lifting your chest, not just tucking your head back.

In most cases, forward head posture is accompanied by rounded shoulders and a slouched upper back posture. In this scenario, simply retracting your head will not correct the problem. In fact, this can cause a jamming of the lower cervical vertebra. A simple instruction to help you lift you chest is to imagine you have a helium balloon attached to each of your chest muscles, and they are lifting them toward the ceiling. Many times, just lifting the chest causes a natural retraction of forward head posture.

2. Perform “chin retractions”.

A great way to re-program yourself to get rid of forward head posture is to perform 10 chin retractions every hour on the hour throughout the day. If you do this throughout an 8 hour workday, along with lifting your chest, you will have done 80 postural corrections! This will help you re-pattern your posture easily and effectively.

3. Ensure you have proper ergonomics in your phone use, car, at work, and at home.

Make sure your computer height is optimal at work and home. Another great trick to do in your car is to move your rear view mirror just an inch higher. This will remind you to sit straight while driving.  NEVER, NEVER, NEVER prop the phone up with your shoulder & make sure you lift the phone so that you can look straight on when texting or surfing the web.

4. Eliminate food allergies.

Food allergies, particularly to gluten, soy, and dairy, can cause your nasal passages to clog, and make it more challenging to breathe. Forward head posture is very common to individuals that mouth breathe. Think about it, what do they teach during CPR to help someone open their airway? Tip the head back. In a standing position, this is done by extending the cervical spine, which inevitably leads to forward head posture.

5. Stop doing endless amounts of crunches.

Excessive amounts of abdominal training, particularly crunches, can cause an adaptive shortening of the abdominal muscles, which then pulls down on the upper body, leading to forward head posture. This can easily be corrected by performing an appropriate amount of exercise for the muscles that lift the chest and shoulders back and down.

I hope this is helpful.  If you have any questions give us a call at Stover Chiropractic, P.C.  If you have heard of any other good advice, please comment below.

Posture Changes with Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Only

Mechanicsville, Virginia — We can all remember our Moms telling us to “sit up straight” or “don’t slouch.”  My bet is they were most concerned with the way it looked.  You know, body language and everything it communicates.  But there is evidence our posture really has a real impact on our health.  I’ve posted on this before.  I was looking at a favorite blog of mine, theatlasoflife.com, which has a great video that shows changes in posture with only upper cervical chiropractic care.  Check it out.

Mechanicsville Chiropractic and Headaches

Mechanicsville, Virginian — When many people in the Mechanicsville area think to visit a chiropractor they are typically suffering from back pain, yet your Mechanicsville chiropractor can sometimes offer you relief for other health symptoms such as headaches (HA).

For many Mechanicsville residents headaches are a common part of everyday life. Some headaches can signal a deficiency in your body that is keeping you from your optimal health levels. Chiropractic may be able to offer you advice or treatment that could help improve your overall health and wellness and reduce your suffering from headaches.

Chiropractors deal with assessing and treating your musculoskeletal system, which is the system of your body that gives you the ability to move using your muscles and bones. When your muscles, bones, and all the other little pieces of your back, such as your spine, are not in their proper places your health may be reduced and you may incur back pain.

While headaches can be caused by stress, toxic fumes, and alcohol consumption it is also possible that misalignments of the joints, muscles, tendons, and bones in your upper back and neck could be the cause of your headaches.  If someone has been through a trauma, like and auto accident, it is not uncommon to have problems with head pain and migraines (a post traumatic HA).  A very common cause of migraines and tension type HA is a subluxation in the neck (the cervical spine).  It is called a cervicogenic headache.

Regular chiropractic care is a drug free way to attempt to realign any misaligned aspects that may be causing headaches or pain to Mechanicsville residents through spinal adjustments, diet, exercise, and stress management etc. At Stover Chiropractic, P.C. we specialize in upper cervical chiropractic care.  More specifically, orthospinology or Grostic technique.

Every patient and headache problem is unique, so you should make sure to get a good diagnosis and treatment plan with which you are comfortable. Questions About Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care?

Mechanicsville, Virginia – Here is some great Q & A about upper cervical chiropractic care.  It comes from the Upper Cervical Blog.  I’ve copied, pasted, combined, and adapted two posts that answer questions and give insightful answers.  The two posts are by: Dr. Brandon Harshe, and Dr. William R. Davis Jr.

Why is the upper cervical area (upper neck) so important to health and well-being?

This is essentially the epicenter of your body. The most important area for communication from your brain to your body. Complete loss of that communication can be devastating . Do you remember Christopher Reeve? Superman had a severe injury to his upper cervical spine which resulted in a 100% loss of function from that area. When you have a upper cervical misalignment you are not losing 100% of the function but you may be losing 30%, 50% or more of the function of your body.

What is Upper Cervical Care?

Says Dr. Davis:

A unique health care solution that focuses on correcting an underlying source of interference to proper body function. Accidents and injuries can tear loose the connective tissue that holds the spine in place. This can create a weakness and allow the spine to breakdown and lock into a stressed position. This most frequently starts in the upper neck since it is the most vulnerable to injury and this leads to, in the standing position, one of the hips often can be higher than the other, laying down one of the legs often can be shorter than the other. The head could tilt to one side. And it can be progressive …so that the longer the spine is locked in this position, the more wear and tear can happen.

And by Dr. Harche:

Upper Cervical Care is a very specific technique in which a misalignment of one or both of the top two cervical vertebrae is reduced. These misalignments cause interference to nervous system communication between the brain and body. The specific direction of the misalignment is carefully analyzed so that restoring normal alignment of one of these two upper cervical bones will be as precise as possible. The specificity of Upper Cervical Care is what makes it so gentle. The top vertebra in your spine, the Atlas, is the only vertebra capable of freely moving and narrowing the opening in which the spinal cord travels through. Because of its relative instability compared to the other 23 vertebrae, the Atlas only requires a quick, gentle force to restore its proper position.

What makes Upper Cervical Care unique compared to other care?

There are many forms of spinal health care today. Many focus on addressing local joint motion by administering a short, quick thrust to a localized area. Upper Cervical Doctors influence the entire spinal columns postural balance by returning the heavy head to a more balanced position on top of the narrow neck. Without any popping, cracking or twisting of the spine. It is a gentle, accurate and precise procedure for correcting the spine. With upper cervical care it is not about adjusting someone thousands of times…it is about holding the correction. Staying in alignment is how a person expresses the potential for health.

Who can benefit from Upper Cervical Care?

Any adult or child who wants their body to function at a higher level. Especially those who have experienced head or neck trauma. Not all individuals are misaligned however. Many children and some adults have been assessed in our office who were found to be in alignment and no care was necessary.

How can such a light pressure make such dramatic changes?

For the same reason why one is able to move a pile of heavy bricks with a light push of a wheelbarrow: leverage. Using the first vertebra and the weight of the head to gain a biomechanical advantage, the doctor places their own body on a calculated angle to ensure the correction is specific to the patient’s individual misalignment. The force generated by the doctor is transferred to the patient in such a gentle and precise fashion that many patients are surprised by the light feel. Although the procedure is subtle in it’s application the results often are not! Our patients typically experience fast changes and long lasting results!

What is Upper Cervical Care?

Is Upper Cervical Care painful?

No. As stated above, the specificity of the Upper Cervical analysisallows for a very gentle force to move the Atlas (C1) and/or Axis (C2) in a very specific direction. This allows the body to begin its return to its optimal spinal alignment and thus proper brain to body communication.

Will Upper Cervical Care make me sore?

Usually no. In some rare cases, people might experience more pain after an upper cervical correction simply because their spine is realigning, doing something it hasn’t done in a while, maybe ever. This is similar to exercising for the first time after being sedentary for years. In these cases, healing may take longer.

Is Upper Cervical Care a one time thing?

No. However, the goal of Upper Cervical Care is to have you holding your spinal alignment as long as possible. Depending on the person, this may be days, weeks, or months at a time. It is similar to getting in shape. You won’t achieve the level of fitness you desire after one workout, and the alignment in your spine won’t return to its optimal position after one office visit. It may change significantly, but in most cases, will take time to restore completely. Holding your alignment is what keeps the stress and tension off your spinal cord. This allows your body to function at its highest potential and heal itself optimally. We want you to only come in as often as your spine dictates to us, ie. if you are maintaining your correction on multiple visits in a row then we need to see you less.

Will Upper Cervical Care relieve my pain?

It depends. When the Atlas has become misaligned, it can cause endangering stress or tension on the spinal cord near the brain stem. This can result in any combination of symptoms; from conditions like low back pain and headaches to digestive issues and high blood pressure.

The goal of Upper Cervical Care is not to relieve your pain, but to open up the nervous system communication between the brain and the body so that your body can heal itself effectively. This happens by reducing head neck misalignment. This will not only reduce the stress and tension on the spinal cord, but may also balance the body by returning it to a more optimal alignment.

Often times when these things happen people experience an immediate reduction in their painful symptoms.

If you only practice Upper Cervical Care, does that mean you can’t help the back or other parts of the body?

No. Reducing the misalignment in the upper cervical spine allows the spine to reduce its compensations. If you think about the spine as three segments, it makes more sense. There is the skull, the Atlas (c1), and the rest of the spine from Axis (C2) down to the sacrum. Since the rest of the spine from C2 and below is connected by intervertebral discs and ligaments, it moves similar to a wave when head/neck misalignment is present. Think of it as if the spine has been wound up. This winding up involves vertebral compensations, stress and tension on the nervous system pathways, with often a resulting muscular and/or visceral disfunction.

By reducing head/neck misalignment, the spine is able to unwind, so to speak. As a result, the spinal compensations diminish, the nervous system can communicate optimally with the body, and overall bodily function improves.

In short, reducing interference at the level of Atlas affects the entire body, not simply the upper cervical spine.

At Stover Chiropractic, P.C. I practice orthospinology (otherwise known as Grostic) style of upper cervical chiropractic.  If you have questions, please give us a call (804-559-1100) or explore the website.

Mechanicsville Spine Adjustment

Mechanicsville, Virginia — My name is Dr. Tripp Stover. You may have heard the terms “spinal adjustment” and “spinal manipulation” used interchangeably when describing Mechanicsville chiropractors. Both terms refer to a process through which the spine is realigned or readjusted in an effort to improve overall health and wellness.

Most chiropractors prefer the use of the term “spinal adjustment” as it seems to better describe the correct chiropractic process.  The objective for a chiropractor is to be very specific when giving an adjustment.  A manipulation would imply a non-specific procedure intending to mobilize a joint.  Sometimes this is a great help, but when a person has a subluxation which is interfering with nerve function, they need a specific procedure.  This is what chiropractic has to offer over the gross manipulations that physical therapists, medical doctors, or osteopaths are trained to do.  The result of an adjustment is better mobility, less pain, AND a healthier nervous system.

Lower back pain for people in Mechanicsville is sometimes the result of vertebrae in the spine moving out of their normal position in relation to the overall structure of the back.

The back is a complex system of ligaments, joints, tissues, muscles, and other vertebrae. All must be working in harmony for things to feel good, and a spinal adjustment may be what you need.

A regular spinal adjustment to your spine can help move any misaligned components back into position, and may improve lower back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, sciatic, and even headaches.

Spine adjustments are applied gently by a trained and licensed chiropractor. I am a trained and licensed chiropractor working in Mechanicsville at Stover Chiropractic, P.C..

Come and see us: we’ll develop an individual plan to incorporate the techniques best suited to your individual needs, age, and condition. At Stover Chiropractic, P.C. our specialty is the spinal adjustment.

At Stover Chiropractic, P.C., we offer upper cervical spinal adjusting (Grostic/orthospinology).  If you are looking for a professional spinal adjustment in the area, give us a call at 804-559-1100.

Allergies and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

Mechanicsville, Virginia — This past weekend I participated in an event, the Connections Fair, at the Children’s Museum of Richmond.  It was a resource fair for children and youth with special needs.  Outstanding event.  But that isn’t why I’m writing this post.  We provided information about how chiropractic can be a help with children broadly speaking, and specifically for children with special needs, like ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities and so on.  It was great to share because it was a new idea for most people who walked by.

At our table we had a variety of pamphlets for people to take.  Well at the last minute on a whim, I decided to include a pamphlet on allergies and how chiropractic can help.  You know, it is allergy season, so I thought people might be interested.  WOW.  Where they interested?  Almost everyone took one.  I’ve often heard, “If you live in Virginia long enough, you WILL get allergies.”  No doubt I knew it was a struggle for many folks, but in this crowd it seemed everyone was affected, or their loved ones (with special needs) where sufferers of allergies.

This does not seem so odd to a chiropractor, but it may not be so intuitive to many.  Simply put, an allergy is an overreaction of one’s immune system to something.  Usually something foreign to our body.  We want our immune system to recognize “foreign invaders” to our bodies, but we don’t want it to overreact.  Especially to something that isn’t a threat and is very common in the environment.  Like pollen.  Like dander.  Like dust mites.  Like cleaners.  Like peanut oil.  And the list goes on.

So we know an allergy is an overreaction of the immune system.  Well, at the risk of over simplifying again, our immune system is very intimately tied to how well our nervous system is functioning.  Please see the quote  below from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease:

“Evidence is mounting that the immune system and the nervous system are linked in several ways. One well-known connection involves the adrenal glands. In response to stress messages from the brain, the adrenal glands release hormones into the blood. In addition to helping a person respond to emergencies by mobilizing the body’s energy reserves, these “stress hormones” can stifle the protective effects of antibodies and lymphocytes.

Another link between the immune system and the nervous system is that the hormones and other chemicals that convey messages among nerve cells also “speak” to cells of the immune system. Indeed, some immune cells are able to manufacture typical nerve cell products, and some lymphokines can transmit information to the nervous system. Moreover, the brain may send messages directly down nerve cells to the immune system. Networks of nerve fibers have been found connecting to the lymphoid organs.”

So it is reasonable to assume if one has some sort of stress on the nervous system (physical or emotional) the immune system would not work well and therefore allergies may develop or be aggravated.  The most common physical stress to the immune system would be the subluxation.  The correction of subluxations by a chiropractor would result a healthier nervous system which leads to a healthier immune system.  A healthier immune system would lead to less allergies, or less intense allergies, or in some cases–no allergies!

I also wanted to share some information from a blog post at The Atlas of Life blog.  Dr. Harshe explains allergies and subluxations well:

“Spring is a beautiful time of the year. Flowers are blossoming, trees are blooming, and leaves are turning green.

It is also a time for a certain disorder of the immune system, something we know as seasonal allergies.

But did you know that allergies are not a part of life, that it is not normal to experience itchiness, conjunctivitis, and runny noses dripping with mucous?

These symptoms are signs that your immune system is compromised, that it cannot defend itself against normally harmless substances we call allergens.

Because our immune systems can’t withstand these allergens, our IgE antibodies activate an excessive amount of mast cells (white blood cells) and basophils to respond, creating an extreme case of inflammation. Hence, the symptoms mentioned above.

So, if allergies are a disorder of the immune system, how do you fix it?

As it turns out, the immune system, like every other system in the body, is controlled by the nervous system. The nervous system is the master system in the body, controlling all functions in the body such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, gastrointestinal function, etc.

Interference to the nervous system will compromise any of those aforementioned systems, including the immune system. Interference comes by way of the vertebral subluxation, a spinal misalignment that results in pressure or tension on the spinal cord near the level of the brain stem. Since the brain stem is the mission control center of the nervous system, a vertebral subluxation at C1 or C2 can be very debilitating to the overall function of the body.

This allergy season, make sure your immune system is functioning properly by getting your nervous system checked. As someone who has suffered from bad seasonal allergies most of my life, I can tell you from experience how important this is for your health.”

Recommendations from Dr. Stover:

-For a book that is written at a lay level and does a great job of explaining how the immune system functions and how to keep it healthy check out Mary Ruebush, PhD in the book Why Dirt is Good.  Well done.

Sciatica and Upper Cervical Care

image

Mechanicsville, Virginia — As an upper cervical chiropractor it is always a challenge to explain to someone who is new to chiropractic just how symptoms that are not near the neck could be related to a problem in the neck.  I see a fair amount of sciatica cases.   At any one time we are usually caring for several people who have the horrible pain related to sciatica.  It turns out most have the upper cervical subluxation either as the cause of the pain or the cause of the postural changes that eventually cause disc problems, which irritate the sciatic nerve.  So I’m often trying to explain that connection to sciatica.

A blog post at The Upper Cervical Blog does a great job of explaining and showing with pictures.  I have copied it below.  Please visit the website for much more great information.

From The Upper Cervical Blog: March 8th, 2011, by Dr. William R. Davis Jr., D.C.

Sciatica that affects both legs (bilateral) is slightly less common than one sided (unilateral) sciatic nerve pain. Either leg can be affected individually or both together at once. Bilateral symptoms have a reputation as being a highly variable pain process and most patients demonstrate pain, tingling, weakness or numbness throughout wide ranging areas of the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet.
Being an upper cervical chiropractor many people cannot understand how I can get such good results with lower back and leg pain. But the truth is one of the most common conditions that I see in my practice is lower back pain with or without leg pain or sciatica.

So what does the neck have to do with the lower back and legs?

Upper neck misalignments (can) cause the posture of the body to be altered. Accidents and injuries to the head and neck will tear loose the tissue that holds the spine in place which will create a weakness and allow the spine to break down and lock into a stressed position.

The most movable bone in the body is located at the base of the skull and is called the Atlas. When the Atlas has lost it’s normal position the weight of the head is shifted to one side or the other.

Once this shift has taken place the body will begin to compensate. One of the shoulders will typically become lower and the pelvis will distort in order to compensate for lack of balance in the upper neck.

This Functional Pelvic Distortion is the underlying factor in many sciatic cases. This twisting and tilting of the pelvis causes a tethering on the sciatic nerve or nerves, inflammation and muscle spasms in most cases.

Here is an example from my office just last month.

Jim had lower back pain for years and was seeking help for severe degenerative disc disease in the lower back from a spinal decompression center in the area. After receiving the spinal decompression treatment his lower back pain increased and eventually he began getting intense sciatica down both legs.

He was referred to our office by a friend and came in quite sceptical that an upper cervical correction could help his lower back and legs. But at the encouragement of his friend he decided to give it a shot.

He had a history of severe head and neck traumas including several concussions and a auto racing crash at 145 mph.

He was assessed and found to have significant postural problems originating from the upper neck. His head and neck were markedly off to the right side and his pelvis was severely tilted and twisted 3 degrees from level. His thermographic scans showed severe inflammation in the upper neck and lower back.

He had lower back pain mostly on the left side and leg pain from the buttock to the foot on the left and sporadically on the right as well. He also had numbness and tingling on both sides worse in the feet.

He noticed if he moved his head back into extension it would increase the leg pain.

He was barely walking, could not sit for more than 5 minutes and was taking 4 Codeines and 12 Advil per day!

His x-rays showed significant disc degeneration in the lower back and neck and a very complicated and unstable upper cervical misalignment.

We began working on him and results were slow because of the instability of his misalignment. Once he began to hold his correction and the pressure remained off of the nerves for prolonged periods of time, his pain began slowing improving. A 30% reduction in the pain and the majority of the numbness in the legs was gone in the first month. He is in his second month now and his corrections are holding better and better. His hips stay level for weeks at a time and now he is completely off of the pain pills and able to sit for long periods of time again and his pain has gone from a constant 10/10 pain to a sporadic 3/10 pain that has localized to one leg. He and his wife just left on a week long cruise and he is very happy!

I never did any treatment on his lower back! I only corrected the underlying postural problems in the spine that were causing the lower back pain and the sciatica. By balancing out the head and the neck the pelvis is able to stay level and the pressure stays off the nerves.

Who do you know that has recurring lower back pain or sciatica? Who do you know that is considering surgery, decompression, injections or other overpriced and dangerous options?

The best questions to ask to see if upper cervical chiropractic could help you is…

Have you had head or neck traumas in the past?

Do you have obvious postural issues? Head tilts to one side, shoulders uneven, etc.

The results that I see are common in upper cervical offices. If you google upper cervical and sciatica you will see many of the patients who have been helped with sciatica across the country.
